Barcelona vs Paris Saint-Germain predictions

Xavi Hernandez probably would have settled for a draw when Barcelona headed to the French capital to face Paris Saint-Germain last week. In the end, he got more than that.

The La Liga champions, who will soon be dethroned by Real Madrid at home, hold a 3-2 aggregate advantage ahead of the second leg on Tuesday.

Barcelona opened the scoring in the first half through Raphinha, but a strong start to the second period saw PSG turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead.

Yet Barcelona did not let their heads drop and they were back on level terms shortly after the hour mark as Raphinha notched his second of the game.

Things got even better for the Catalan outfit late on, as substitute Andreas Christensen rose highest to nod home what would prove to be the winning goal in the 77th minute.

Barcelona were worthy winners. PSG played well for only a 15-minute period immediately after the interval. True, they had further chances to find the back of the net. But Barca had opportunities of their own and they were more ruthless in dispatching them than their opponents.

Needless to say, Xavi’s side are now in pole position to advance to the semi-finals. Barcelona can still salvage something from this season in the Champions League, a tournament they have not won since Luis Enrique, the current PSG boss, led them to glory in 2015.

Barcelona have not had much joy in continental competition since then. They have only reached one semi-final post-2015 - and that ended in an ignominious 4-0 defeat by Liverpool in the second leg after Barca won the first match 3-0.

In the two seasons prior to this one, the Blaugrana did not even advance beyond the group phase. Xavi has already announced he will leave the club this summer, and the Barcelona legend will be determined to go out on a high by winning the Champions League.

Barcelona vs PSG betting tips

This tie is still in the balance but Barcelona are the favourites to advance at the expense of PSG.

PSG or draw - 8/13 (Paddy Power)

Paris Saint-Germain are not short of motivation either, with the French side still waiting for their maiden success in this competition. That sets the second leg up nicely.

Luis Enrique's side have their work cut out on Tuesday. But a team that is not used to being underdogs may actually relish their unusual status of non-favourites.

Before the first leg, Luis Enrique said his managerial approach better represented Barcelona's traditional style of play than that of Xavi. PSG did indeed dominate possession last time out, but Barcelona had the greater cutting edge in advanced areas.

PSG must not be afraid to play in transition on this occasion. They possess a speedy front three in Kylian Mbappe, Marco Asensio and Ousmane Dembele, so Barcelona will have to be wary of their opponents breaking forward at pace.

For all that PSG were disappointing for long periods of the first leg, they could easily have drawn the game. Luis Enrique’s team are by no means out of this tie just yet.

Second half higher scoring - Evens (Paddy Power)

The first legs of all the Champions League quarter-finals were entertaining affairs and we are all hoping for more of the same this week.

This tie could still go either way and we may therefore see a relatively cagey first half, with Barcelona keen to protect their lead and Paris Saint-Germain determined to avoid going gung-ho too early.

When we reach the second half, though, at least one of these sides will be incentivised to take more risks.

Extra time is a possibility, of course, but Barcelona’s one-goal lead means this one will probably be settled within 90 minutes.

If PSG are still trailing on aggregate at half-time, they will be obliged to open up after the break. Or if Barcelona’s lead no longer exists at half-time, they will adopt a more attacking approach in the second period.

Either way, we like the look of this wager at 1/1.

Kylian Mbappe to score any time - Evens (Paddy Power)

By his high standards, Mbappe had a quiet night at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of this quarter-final.

On his last visit to Barcelona, though, the France international was at his brilliant best, scoring a hat-trick as Paris Saint-Germain won 4-1 at the Camp Nou in 2021.

With Mbappe set to move to Real Madrid in the summer, he will be especially keen to score against the Blancos’ arch-rivals.

There are more reasons than that to choose him in this market, though. Mbappe was handled well by Barcelona last time out, but the home team will probably defend higher up the pitch on Tuesday.

It only takes one run in behind the Barca backline for Mbappe to do serious damage, and over the course of 90 minutes with PSG fighting to get back in the tie, he will surely get at least one major opportunity.
