Rochdale boss Keith Hill on securing ex-Preston North End and Leeds United ‘keeper for another week

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has extended his loan at League One side Rochdale by a further seven days.

The experienced shot stopper is currently with the League One side on an emergency loan deal.

Having secured Lonergan for another week, Rochdale boss Keith Hill has said, via their official club website: “I thought Andy did well against Coventry on Saturday, especially having not played for a substantial amount of time,”

“He’s got great experience and he’ll help us on the training pitch and in games whilst Josh Lillis is injured.
“Josh is about three weeks away from being fit, so it’s important that we’ve got the experience and knowledge of Andy.”

Lonergan is a vastly experienced goalkeeper in the Football League and is a shrewd signing by Rochdale. He has previously played for Preston North End, Leeds United, Bolton Wanderers, Fulham and Wolves.

The 6ft 4inc ‘keeper only joined Boro in the summer but has played just four games this season for them, all coming in cup competitions. His contract at the Riverside is up in June.

He is a great option for Rochdale to have whilst Lillis recovers from injury. The third tier side are currently 18th in the league but just a point ahead of the relegation zone. Hill’s side will be hoping to pull away from danger over the coming weeks.
