Ex-Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United goalkeeper extends Rochdale loan

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has extended his loan at Rochdale for a further week.

The experienced shot stopper has played six times for the League One side so far since his move there and will remain there for a bit longer, as announced by their official club website this morning.

Rochdale are currently looking for a new manager after sacking Keith Hill. Former Shrewsbury Town and Ipswich Town boss Paul Hurst and the current Barrow manager Ian Evatt are two of the frontrunners for the vacant role.

Their caretaker manager, Brian Barry-Murphy, is pleased to have secured Lonergan for another seven days: “I think the clean sheet on Tuesday night was as much a reward for him as it was for the rest of the lads. The guys in the dressing room felt as though they’d overburdened him in the games previously and let him down.

“He made some good saves the other night to ensure we got the clean sheet, but that’s what he does on a regular basis. It was a fitting reward for him and we’re very grateful to have him here.”

Lonergan is a vastly experienced goalkeeper in the Football League and has turned out to be a shrewd signing by Rochdale. He has previously played for Preston North End, Leeds United, Bolton Wanderers, Fulham and Wolves.

The 6ft 4inc ‘keeper only joined Boro in the summer but has played just four games this season for them, all coming in cup competitions. His contract at the Riverside is up in June.
