Preston North End, Stoke City and Sunderland in battle to sign Oldham Athletic defender

Preston North End, Stoke City and Sunderland are in a battle to sign Oldham Athletic’s George Edmundson according to a report from the Football Insider.

While the Latics have had many problems this season, including the short reign of Paul Scholes as head coach, one of the highlights has been the performances of Edmundson. The 21-year-old defender came through the Oldham academy and after several loan spells at non-league clubs such as Ramsbottom United, Alfreton Town and AFC Fylde, he broke into the first team and has been so good that he was named in the League Two Team of the Year.

But his performances have been noted by teams higher up in the league ladder and three teams have been reported to be interested in signing him. Preston, Stoke and Sunderland all want to sign Edmundson and are hoping to make a bid this summer. Preston and Stoke are going to have a mid-table finish in the Sky Bet Championship this season and are looking for players who can push them into the play-offs. Sunderland look set for the Sky Bet League One play-offs and don’t know what league they will be in next year but no matter where they are playing, Edmundson would be a good addition for them.

With three big-name teams in higher divisions looking to sign Edmundson, it is unlikely that Oldham will be able to hold onto Edmundson. But they may be able to get plenty of money out of the move which would help them be more competitive in Sky Bet League Two.
